Biodiversity of Archaea and floral of two inland saltern ecosystems in the Alto Vinalopó Valley, Spain
Basilio Zafrilla, Rosa M Martínez-Espinosa, María A Alonso, María J Bonete Saline Systems 2010, 6:10 (13 October 2010)
Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed
|
Editor’s summary
While coastal solar salterns are well-studied, detailed investigations of inland salterns which have a more complex ecology are relatively rare. Analysis by Zafrilla et al. of two inland salterns near Alicante, Spain showed that the plant communities are typical of salt marshes and the microbial population are similar to coastal salterns.

Comparison of four phaC genes from Haloferax mediterranei and their function in different PHBV copolymer biosyntheses in Haloarcula hispanica

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed
|
Editor’s summary
The genome sequence of Haloferax mediterranei revealed several new genes for polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) synthesis which were shown to account for biosynthesis of PHBV, a copolymer of 3-hydroxybutyrate and 3-hydroxyvalerate. Han et al. report that these newly identified genes have biotechnological potential for production of novel materials.

Dynamics of Sundarban estuarine ecosystem: eutrophication induced threat to mangroves
Suman Manna, Kaberi Chaudhuri, Somenath Bhattacharyya, Maitree Bhattacharyya Saline Systems 2010, 6:8 (11 August 2010)
Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed
|
Editor’s summary
Manna et al. have conducted one of the few microbial ecology studies on the Sundarbans, a mangrove forest home to the Bengal tiger. Eutrophication as well as presence of toxic Dinoflagellates and Cyanophyceae point to polluted water quality of the estuary and suggests that the ecology of this world heritage site is highly threatened.
